Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who conducts the GRE® Test?

Educational Testing Service (ETS). The official website being www.ets.org

What is the official website of the GRE® Test?

What is the new GRE® pattern starting Sep 2023?

Here is a snapshot:

  1. The new Test has 27 questions each for Verbal & Quantitative sections spread across 2 testing sections for each as opposed to 40 questions each spread across 2 testing sections each.
  2. The Analytical Writing section has only 1 essay task as opposed to 2 essay tasks.
  3. There will not be an Unscored/Research section in the new GRE.
  4. The duration of the test will be less than 2 hours as opposed to almost 4 hours.
  5. The testing algorithm, however, remains the same.

How does the GRE® work?

GRE® is a Computer Adaptive Test, adaptive at a section level. Each testing area has 2 sections. The level of difficulty of Section 1 for both Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning testing areas is medium. Depending on the performance on Section 1, the level of difficulty of the corresponding Section 2 becomes difficult or easy. The test is administered on the computer and the sections have to be tackled in the order in which they appear; you, however, can navigate back and forth within a section.

Is there partial marking/credit?

There is No partial marking/credit across all sections. For questions that require a student to select ALL possible correct answers in Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning, a student must select all the correct options to get credit for a question.

Is there negative marking?

There is No explicit negative marking. But, the adaptive algorithm takes into account your performance on a section overall.

When do I get my score?

Unofficial score for the Verbal & Quantitative sections – Immediately after you complete the test. Official score including AW score – about 8-10 days (for the new GRE) and 10-15 days (for the current GRE) after your test date.

How do I report my score?

You can send your official scores to 4 programs on the GRE test date prior to the start of the exam. For additional score reporting, you will need to pay an additional fee per score recipient and send scores online from your login.

What is official score reporting?

Sending your GRE score to universities/programs you want to apply to through ETS, which conducts the GRE test.

Can I select my best score to report to universities?

Yes, you can. The GRE gives you the option of ScoreSelect feature that you can use to select the better/best score to report to universities (provided you have take the GRE more than once during 5 years).

Do I need to take TOEFL or IELTS?

TOEFL and IELTS both are English Language Proficiency tests. TOEFL is conducted by US based organization and IELTS is conducted by UK/AUS based organization. Previously, US universities used to accept only TOEFL scores, but now-a-days even most of the US universities accepting IELTS scores also. In any case, it’s best to check the admissions requirements of the college/university you are applying to.
